Fāngliáo (枋寮) is a coastal township in southwestern Pingtung named for wooden shelters built by Qing dynasty era settlers who came to fell timber from the nearby mountains. Fangliao Station sits at the junction of the Western Main Line and the South-Link Line, making the town a transport gateway to the Hengchun Peninsula and southeastern Taiwan. Several Japanese colonial era buildings have been heritage-listed, among them the Subprefecture Office (枋寮支廳舍) and the Martial Arts Hall (枋寮演武場). In the hills behind town, the Shitouying Fort (石頭營二戰日軍要塞) is an extensive World War 2 tunnel complex that has become a case study in heritage preservation after a solar farm was built over part of the site. The township is also notable for having three Dachen new villages, established in 1955 for refugees from the Dachen Islands.
