Liúqiú (琉球), commonly known as Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球), is a coral reef island off the southwestern coast of Pingtung. Originally called Lamey (拉美島), the island was inhabited by an Indigenous community until a Dutch punitive expedition in 1636 wiped them out, an event remembered at Wuguei Cave (烏鬼洞) where islanders are said to have hidden. Today the island is a popular tourist destination and an important nesting habitat for green sea turtles.
