Dachen New Villages

The last exchange of territory in the Chinese Civil War occurred in 1955, when the Republic of China retreated from their last remaining stronghold in Zhejiang Province, the Dachen Islands (大陳諸島), during Operation King Kong (金剛計劃). Tens of thousands of islanders were evacuated and resettled in 35 officially sanctioned villages around Taiwan. Conditions in Taiwan were still difficult at that time, and the refugees were only provided with basic housing and infrastructure. Most such villages have emptied out over time, as the descendants of the original villagers integrate into Taiwanese society, or emigrate.
