Tàiwǔ (泰武) is a mountainous Indigenous township on the western slopes of the Central Mountain Range in eastern Pingtung. Beidawu Mountain (北大武山), the highest peak in southern Taiwan, is sacred to the Paiwan people who make up the vast majority of the township’s population. Near the summit, the Dawushan Shinto Shrine (大武山祠), built in 1931 at 2,940 meters elevation, remains remarkably intact owing to its extreme remoteness.
