Xīnyuán (新園) is a rural township on the alluvial plain of western Pingtung, just across the Donggang River from Donggang. Liyushan (鯉魚山), a low hill rising from the otherwise flat landscape, is the township’s most notable feature, home to an abandoned Hoffmann brick kiln (磚窯) and more than a dozen World War 2 fortifications built in preparation for a possible Allied landing. The township also retains several tobacco curing barns, including the distinctive Chen tobacco barn (陳氏菸樓) cluster.
