Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong Island (香港島) was ceded in perpetuity to Britain by the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, following the First Opium War. When the British arrived in 1841, the island had a population of around 7,500. It remains the political and financial center of Hong Kong.
