Héngchūn (恆春) is a historic town on the eponymous Hengchun Peninsula at the southern tip of Pingtung. Formerly known as Langqiao (瑯嶠), the area was renamed Hengchun (“eternal spring”) in 1875 when Qing authorities built a walled city here, the southernmost in the empire. All four city gates survive as national monuments: Hengchun Old City. The iconic Eluanbi Lighthouse (鵝鑾鼻燈塔), a fortified lighthouse built in 1883, stands at the peninsula’s southern tip. Other notable sites include the Princess of Eight Treasures Temple (八寶公主廟), a shrine venerating a purported Dutch princess, and the converted Hengchun Theater (恆春戲院).
