Cháozhōu (潮州) is the second largest urban center in Pingtung, named by settlers from Chaozhou Prefecture (潮州府) in Guangdong who began arriving in the early 18th century. The town served as the administrative seat of Chōshū District (潮州郡) during the Japanese colonial era; the former village office, now the Chaozhou Post Office (舊潮州郵局), is among several heritage buildings from that period. Chaozhou once supported a remarkable number of golden age cinemas and the town retains a distinctly vintage atmosphere. The Sanshan Guowang Temple (三山國王廟), dating to 1773, reflects the area’s Hakka roots, while remnants of Choshu Airfield (潮州飛行場) survive in the surrounding farmland.
