Dōnggǎng (東港) is a fishing port in western Pingtung and the point of departure for the island of Liuqiu. Already one of Taiwan’s major harbours in the Qing dynasty, it remains known for its fishing industry and the triennial Donggang Yingwang (東港迎王平安祭典) boat-burning festival. Dapeng Bay (大鵬灣), the large lagoon south of town, housed an Imperial Japanese Navy seaplane base from 1938; the seaplane maintenance hangars and the adjacent Gonghe New Village (共和新村) are now heritage-listed.
