Kāndǐng (崁頂) is a small rural township in western Pingtung. The name means “on top of the ridge”, referring to the slightly elevated terrain that spared the area from the flooding that regularly afflicted surrounding lowlands. Originally Makatao territory, the area was settled by Hokkien immigrants from Zhangzhou in the late 17th century. Several World War 2 military remnants survive in the surrounding farmland, including pillboxes in the rice paddies of Gangdong Village (港東村).
