Hong Kong (香港), formally a special administrative region of China since 1997, retains its individual identity as a vital center of cultural production, finance, and commerce in East Asia. Hong Kong Island was originally colonized by the British in the aftermath of the First Opium War. This was soon followed by the acquisition of Kowloon and the New Territories.
