Checheng (車城) - Spectral Codex

Chēchéng (車城) is a township on the Hengchun Peninsula in southern Pingtung. The area is closely associated with the Mudan Incident (牡丹社事件): in 1871, 54 shipwrecked Ryukyuan sailors were killed by local Indigenous people, prompting a Japanese punitive expedition in 1874. Several heritage-listed monuments from that episode survive in the township, including the Tomb of the 54 Ryukyuan Sailors (琉球藩民五十四名墓), the Base Camp Monument (明治七年討蕃軍本營地), and the Commander Saigō Monument (西鄉都督遺蹟紀念碑). Fu’an Temple (福安宮), a land god temple dating to the Ming-Zheng era, remains the center of town.
