Commander Saigō Jūdō Monument (西鄉都督遺蹟紀念碑) - Spectral Codex
西鄉都督遺蹟紀念碑

A monument commemorating the commander of Japanese forces dispatched to Taiwan in a punitive mission against Taiwanese Indigenous people in 1874, part of an episode generally known as the Mudan Incident (牡丹社事件). It was designed by Ide Kaoru (井手薰) and completed in 1936 as part of the 40th anniversary of the Japanese invasion of Taiwan. After the war the inscription was changed to reflect ROC historic narratives, emphasizing Indigenous resistance to Japanese forces. Controversy erupted in the 2010s as the monument was declared a heritage property and efforts were undertaken to restore the original inscription.
