Zhōngshān (中山) is situated in central Taipei and spans Keelung River (基隆河) from the foothills of Yangmingshan (陽明山) to the downtown core. It is home to many historic attractions including Lin An Tai Residence, a well-preserved Taiwanese courtyard house (or sanheyuan) and garden; Rinzai Gokoku Zen Temple, dating back to 1900; Seven Seas Residence, originally built for the commander of the US Seventh Fleet before becoming the home of Chiang Ching-kuo; and The Grand Hotel, a monumental expression of Chinese Renaissance architecture. Contemporary landmarks include Taipei Fine Arts Museum, established in 1983 as Taiwan’s first modern arts museum, and Airplane Alley, a popular plane-spotting location at the end of one the runway at Songshan International Airport.
