Datong

Dàtóng (大同), along with Wanhua, encompasses the most historic parts of Taipei. Nowhere is this better experienced than along Dihua Street (迪化街) in Dadaocheng (大稻埕), in the central part of the district. Dadaocheng developed as Taipei’s second major settlement during the Qing dynasty and became a thriving commercial center for tea and textile trade, with the Xiahai Chenghuang Temple serving as a spiritual anchor for the community. The district preserves an abundance of Japanese colonial era architecture, numerous historic temples including the Dalongdong Baoan Temple and Fachukung Temple, and was once home to many theaters serving the bustling mercantile population.
