Da’an

Dà’ān (大安) is located in the heart of Taipei and hosts major universities, bustling shopping districts, and countless restaurants, bars, and cafés. It is one of the more upscale but also livable parts of the city and is home to a relatively large population of Westerners. The district contains remnants of the notorious colonial era Taipei Prison, built in 1904 and demolished in 1963 after serving as a site of political repression during both Japanese rule and the White Terror. Wistaria Tea House, a Japanese-style wooden house from the early 1920s, became a meeting place for liberal academics in the 1950s and now operates as a teahouse preserving its vintage character.
