Nángǎng (南港) forms the eastern tip of Taipei, jutting into the mountain valley that leads through a narrow industrial corridor to the port city of Keelung by way of Xizhi. Historically the district was known for coal mining, evidenced by remnants such as Songshan No. 2 Mine, which ceased operations in 1971. Also of interest is the Songshan Sanatorium Administrators’ Residence, completed in 1935, which has been restored and now operates as a Japanese-style restaurant.
