Sōngshān (松山) is a district in eastern Taipei, formerly known as Sek-kháu (錫口) during the Qing dynasty era and Matsuyama during the Japanese colonial era. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Ketagalan people who called it Malysyakkaw, meaning “where the river curves”, the area developed as a trading center with mining and tea cultivation in the surrounding hills. The district is home to Taipei Songshan Airport, Taiwan’s domestic and regional airport, and Taipei Arena, a major sports and entertainment venue. Songshan has emerged as an important commercial and financial hub, hosting headquarters of major media companies. The district is perhaps best known for Raohe Night Market (饒河夜市), one of Taipei’s most popular night markets, as well as the resplendent Ciyou Temple.
