A tiny modernist residence designed and built by Wang Da-hong (王大閎), one of the ROC’s more well-known architects, along Jianguo South Road (建國南路) in Da’an District in 1953. It was demolished by the 1970s and replaced by larger residences, but recreated from the original blueprints just south of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) in 2014. It now operates as Wang Da-hong House Theatre (王大閎建築劇場), a simple showroom with some information about the house and a few videos playing in a loop.
Wang Da-hong (王大閎, 1917–2018) was one of the most influential architects in the Republic of China. Educated at Cambridge and Harvard, where he studied under Walter Gropius, he brought modernist principles to Taiwan while incorporating traditional Chinese elements. Other notable works include the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (1972) and the Honglu apartment block (1962).
I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
