Xītún (西屯) occupies the northwestern edge of downtown Taichung, rising from the Taichung Basin onto the Dadu Plateau (大肚台地). Much of the district has been laid out and built up only in recent decades, deliberately drawing the city’s commercial and civic heart west from the declining Central District. It now holds the seat of municipal government and the sprawling Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市), one of the largest in Taiwan. It is also home to Tunghai University (東海大學), whose modernist Luce Memorial Chapel is one of Taichung’s most iconic works of architecture. Along the plateau above the campus runs a chain of Cold War anti-airborne fortifications built to repel PLA paratroopers over the western approaches to the city.
