Wúqī (梧棲) is a small district on the coastal plains in western Taichung, its old harbor town once known as Wuchagang (五汊港). Hokkien merchants made it a trading and customs port, giving rise to Wuqi Old Street and the 1856 Chaoyuan Temple. In the 1970s the deep-water Port of Taichung was built along the shore, one of Taiwan’s principal international harbors, ringing the old town with docks and industrial estates. The small-town core endures all the same, its Japanese colonial era police station restored as Wuqi Culture Office.
