Taichung City

Taichung City, for the purposes of this site, comprises the five core districts of Taichung: Central District (中區), East District (東區), South District (南區), North District (北區), and West District (西區). These five districts were once loosely known as Dongdadun (東大墩), and had this convention been modernized, it would have been called Dongtun (東屯). This would complete the set of Nantun (南屯), Xitun (西屯), and Beitun (北屯), the three suburban districts surrounding the city center.

The Japanese colonial era grid plan remains legible in the downtown core, which retains a concentration of early 20th century architecture. Major landmarks include the Taichung Railway Station, built in 1917 and now a museum; the illustrious Prefecture Hall (1920), the former seat of government; Taichung Park Pavilion, a royal retreat now popularized as the symbol of the city; and the Miyahara optometrist clinic, reborn as an ornate gift shop.
