Dàlǐ (大里) is a suburban district on the southern edge of Taichung. In the Qing dynasty era it was a busy inland river port and the base of the Lin Shuangwen rebellion (林爽文事件). The river later shifted course and the port faded to farmland until post-war industry and urban expansion remade Dali into one of the city’s most populous districts. Traces of the old town survive along Dali Old Street and at the Qijiangjun Temple, while the disused Taichung Tobacco Factory remains a reminder of the area’s history of tobacco cultivation.
