Shígāng (石岡) is a small, predominantly Hakka district on the Dajia River in north-central Taichung. In the Qing dynasty era an earthwork known as the tuniu (土牛) marked the boundary between Han settlers and Indigenous land here, commemorated today by the 1761 boundary stele and the Tuniu Hakka Cultural Hall. When the 921 Earthquake struck in 1999, the Chelungpu Fault running beneath the district ruptured the Shigang Dam and tore up the tracks at the railway station, both now preserved as memorials. The sturdy 1941 rice barn came through intact, and the railway’s old course to Dongshi is now the Dongfeng Bicycle Green Way (東豐自行車綠廊).
