Tàipíng (太平) is a sprawling suburban district on the eastern side of Taichung, climbing from the basin floor into the foothills of Toubiankeng (頭汴坑). Like much of the eastern margins of the Taichung Basin, it was once tobacco country, and curing barns still stand near the heritage-listed Taiping Tobacco Market. The elaborate Wu Luanqi Tomb (吳鸞旂墓園), built in 1922 for one of Taichung’s leading gentry families, lies among the cemeteries on the city’s edge. Deeper into the hills, the well-preserved Toubiankeng Police Station recalls the Japanese colonial drive to extend authority into the mountains.
