Běitún (北屯) is the most populous district in Taichung, sprawling along the northern periphery of the urban core into the hills of Dakeng in the east. Originally farmland known as Sānshí Zhānglí (三十張犁), literally “thirty plows”, the district absorbed waves of post-war military settlement, leaving behind one of the city’s highest concentrations of military dependents’ villages. In the eastern foothills, abandoned developments and amusement parks like Katoli’s World and Encore Garden became landmarks of Taichung’s early urban exploration scene before most were cleared in the 2010s.
