Dàyǎ (大雅) is a suburban district in northwestern Taichung, sprawling along the eastern edge of Dadu Plateau. Long a farming community, it remains Taiwan’s principal wheat-growing district, a rarity in the subtropics. Some of the wheat harvest even goes to Kinmen as seed, helping make the islands’ celebrated kaoliang liquor. Ching Chuan Kang Air Base adjoins the district to the north, and the military dependents’ villages and Cold War defenses that grew up around it survive at Zhongyi New Village and the sprawling set of Lincuo anti-airborne fortifications atop the plateau.
