Yǒnghé (永和) is the smallest district in New Taipei by area, just 5.7 square kilometers, yet consistently ranks as the most densely populated municipality in Taiwan, with approximately 38,000 residents per square kilometer as of 2019. Split from Zhonghe in 1958, the district became a major resettlement area for mainland refugees after 1949, including evacuees from the Dachen Islands in 1955. The construction of Zhongzheng Bridge (中正橋) in the 1950s led to the establishment of Taiwan’s famous late night “breakfast” culture where soy milk is served alongside carb-heavy snacks, a phenomenon celebrated at the thousands of Yǒnghé Dòujiāng (永和豆漿) shops across Taiwan.
