Zhuangwei (壯圍) is a coastal township in coastal Yilan of considerable strategic military importance to the defense of the entire Lanyang Plain (蘭陽平原). It was extensively fortified by the Japanese during World War 2, and again by the ROC government during the Martial Law era. Several coastal sentry posts have been recognized for their heritage value, and the area was also home to Ren’ai New Village, established in 1955 for evacuees from the Dachen Islands.
