Liǔyíng (柳營), literally “Willow Camp”, is a rural district in central Tainan named for its origins as a military encampment during the Ming-Zheng Dynasty. The district is home to the Chen Yonghua Tomb, the original burial site of the pirate-king Koxinga’s chief general, who established the numbered garrison system across the Tainan plain. Though Qing authorities relocated his remains to Fujian the tomb site was rediscovered in 1929 and restored around 2000. Today Liuying is known as the “home of milk”, with its dairy farms producing approximately one-fifth of Taiwan’s milk from over 10,000 dairy cows concentrated in the Baweng (八翁) area. The district also preserves cultural heritage through the Liu Chi-hsiang Memorial Hall, dedicated to the famous Taiwanese painter whose former residence dates to the 1910s.
