Jiali

Jiālǐ (佳里), formerly Soulang (蕭壠), was one of the four great Siraya Indigenous settlements during the Dutch colonial era, alongside Xingang, Mattau, and Backloan. The Dutch established a seminary here in 1659, the first in the East Indies to recruit local students. Jintang Temple (金唐殿), the spiritual heart of the district, received its current name from the Qianlong Emperor after locals helped suppress the Lin Shuangwen Rebellion in the 1780s, and today hosts one of the five major folk religious festivals of coastal Tainan. The former sugar factory has been converted into the Soulangh Cultural Park, a museum preserving Pingpu Indigenous heritage.
