Shanshang

Shānshàng (山上), literally “mountain above”, is a small rural district of approximately 7,000 residents in northeastern Tainan. It is situated on an alluvial plain created by frequent flooding and silt buildup from Zengwen River (曾文溪) and is home to the Tainan Waterworks (原臺南水道), a landmark gravity-fed water purification system designed by British sanitation engineer W.K. Burton and Japanese engineer Hamano Yashiro (濱野彌四郎) during the Japanese colonial era.
