Jiāngjūn (將軍) is a coastal district in southwestern Tainan named after admiral Shi Lang (施琅), the Qing dynasty general who vanquished Ming-Zheng forces in 1683. The district lies between Beimen to the north and Qigu to the south, forming part of a coastal region where solar salt has been produced for over three centuries by channeling seawater into evaporation ponds. Jiangjun is home to the Qingkunshen Fan-Shaped Saltworks, the last salt field constructed in Taiwan, with a unique radial design extending from a central hub operating since 1977. This saltworks, along with all others across Taiwan, was decommissioned in 2002 when the island’s accession to the WTO rendered domestic salt production economically non-viable. The district also encompasses Qingkunshen (青鯤鯓), a fishing village notable as the westernmost settlement on the main island of Taiwan.
