Nánhuà (南化) is the largest district in Tainan by area, located along the mountainous eastern border with Kaohsiung. The district is home to two reservoirs: Nanhua Reservoir (南化水庫), constructed between 1988 and 1993 as a major water source for both Tainan and Kaohsiung, and the smaller Jingmian Reservoir (鏡面水庫), completed in 1980 and now used primarily for backup supply. Below Nanhua Dam lies the Old Battlefield of Tapani (噍吧哖古戰場), site of a major 1915 uprising against Japanese colonial rule led by Yu Qingfang (余清芳). Nanhua also encompasses part of the mudstone badlands region known as Caoshan Moonworld (草山月世界), characterized by chalky, erosion-prone terrain.
