Danei

Dànèi (大內) is a rural district in eastern Tainan where the broad coastal plain meets the foothills of Alishan. It boasts a strong Siraya Indigenous heritage centered on the community surrounding Toushe Kuwa, which hosts one of the most notable Night Ceremonies of the Tainan area. The district preserves the Yang Changli Residence, completed around 1790 and one of the oldest residences in this part of Taiwan, alongside remnants of the Japanese colonial era including a credit union established in 1923. Danei is also notable for the Danei Open-Air Theater, an exceedingly rare example of a 1960s open-air theater for which physical traces including the ticket booth and original enclosure remain intact.
