Gāngshān (岡山), originally known as Āgōngdiàn (阿公店), is a mid-sized city midway between Tainan and Kaohsiung. Its urban character has been highly influenced by the nearby airbase, originally built by the Japanese Navy and later taken over by the Republic of China Air Force. Military housing is a common feeature of the district, and Lequn Village (樂群村), a heritage-listed group of 53 officers’ houses originally built for the Japanese naval air corps, is the most intact remnant of this history.
