Three tunnels dug into the foot of Xiaogangshan (小崗山) in Gangshan by the Japanese Navy’s 61st Air Arsenal (海軍第61航空廠), which began dispersing its production equipment here under cover of night in 1944 as part of an evacuation plan. Each tunnel is approximately 100 meters long, 8 meters high, and 6 meters wide, with blast doors at the entrance; a light railway about 7 kilometers in length carried raw materials, spare parts, and partially assembled aircraft from the arsenal, contrary to a local story that whole aircraft were pushed here by hand. After the war the ROC Air Force used the tunnels as an ammunition depot until 2005. Although decommissioned the tunnels remain on military land closed to the public.
