Táoyuán (桃源) is the largest district in Kaohsiung by area and among the most sparsely populated in all Taiwan, encompassing vast stretches of the Central Mountain Range traversed by the Southern Cross-Island Highway. The population is predominantly Bunun (布農族), with a small Hla’alua (拉阿魯哇族) community, one of Taiwan’s smallest officially recognized Indigenous groups. The district was a center of Bunun resistance during the Japanese colonial era; the remote village of Tamahu served as the mountain hideout of resistance leader Dahu Ali (拉荷·阿雷) for 18 years following the Dahun Incident (大分事件) of 1915.
