Kaohsiung City is the official name for all of Kaohsiung, but for the purposes of this site we still group the eleven districts that formed the old provincial city prior to its amalgamation with Kaohsiung County in 2010. The city grew outward from its harbour, and much of its identity remains tied to the waterfront: the sandbar island of Cijin (旗津) shelters the harbour from the open sea, Yancheng (鹽埕) preserves the Japanese colonial era core built on reclaimed land, and Gushan (鼓山) anchors the western waterfront with Shoushan and Xiziwan.
Further inland, Sanmin (三民) is the most populous district and home to Kaohsiung Main Station, while the compact districts of Xinxing (新興), Qianjin (前金), and Lingya (苓雅) form the administrative and commercial core. To the south, Qianzhen (前鎮) encompasses the Port of Kaohsiung and the Asia New Bay Area redevelopment, and Xiaogang (小港) hosts the international airport at the city’s southern edge.
