Línyuán (林園), formerly known as Línzǎibiān (林仔邊), is the southernmost district of Kaohsiung, situated at the mouth of the Gaoping River (高屏溪) and facing Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球) across the Taiwan Strait. Anjizhan (安記棧), a two-storey courtyard compound built in 1902 for exporting sugar and rice, is a remnant of the district’s former role as a trading port. In the hills above the coast, the Qingshuiyan Tunnel (清水巖原日軍戰備坑道), an extensive coral-stone tunnel system built in 1943 to defend against a potential Allied landing, now attracts hikers and urban explorers.
