Built in 1987 on the site of the former Dai Nippon Ice Manufacturing Taipei Factory (大日本製氷株式會社台北工場), an ice plant whose lineage stretched back to a 1906 Taiwan Ice Company facility just north of Taipei Main Station. In the post-war era the original ice factory was eventually repurposed as a wholesale fish market which closed in 1975 after a newer facility opened on Shuiyuan Road. Chengde Market initially prospered but was mired in ownership disputes from 1995 onward and stood largely vacant, with only the basement levels rented out as a grim, dystopian parking garage. It was finally demolished in 2017.
