Miaoli City

Situated along a river valley in north-central Taiwan, Miaoli City (苗栗市) is the administrative center of Miaoli County. Originally inhabited by the Pazeh Indigenous people, it is now a major center of Hakka culture and language, with 87% of its 86,000 residents identifying as Hakka. The city is also home to a number of historic theaters, including the converted Miaoli Theater and Guoxing Theater, which served the community for decades before most closed in the early 2000s.
