Tai’an

Tai’an Township (泰安鄉) is the only mountain Indigenous township in Miaoli County. It covers just over 600 square kilometers of rugged terrain in the Snow Mountain Range (雪山山脈) with a population of approximately 5,600 residents, over two-thirds of whom are Tayal Indigenous people (泰雅族). Originally called Da’an after the river that originates in its mountains, the township was renamed Tai’an in 1954 and remains known for its hot springs. The area contains scattered remnants of Japanese colonial infrastructure, including the ruins of mountain garrison posts and traces of old Shinto shrines.
