Dàhú (大湖) is a rural township in southern Miaoli renowned as Taiwan’s primary strawberry-producing region, accounting for 80% of the nation’s strawberry output. The township’s modern development began during the Japanese colonial era with the establishment of institutions like the Fayun Monastery (法雲禪寺) in 1914. The devastating 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung Earthquake deeply impacted the community, leading to the construction of the Dahu Earthquake Monument (大湖震災紀念塔) in 1936 as a memorial to the victims.
