Yang Changli Residence
大內楊長利公厝

Situated in Danei, Tainan, this is the Yang family’s ancestral estate, Yang Changli (楊長利). It was built around 1790 by Yang Guangmo (楊光謨), the fourth son of Yang Zheng (楊正), progenitor of this branch of the Yang family in Taiwan, with his elder brother Yang Guangyuan (楊光遠) overseeing the construction. Yang Guangmo earned the rank of gongsheng (貢生) in the imperial examinations of 1761 and made his fortune in trade; his standing entitled the mansion to swallowtail roof ridges and a pair of flagpole stands out front, their bases (旗杆座) and clamp stones (夾杆石) still intact. Known more generally as the Yang Family Old House (楊家古厝) and once nicknamed the “three halls and a hundred and twenty doors” (三落百二門), it also served as a private school during the Qing dynasty era, and ranks among the oldest residences still standing in this part of the country.

Decades of neglect have caught up with this old house and it is now in a very dilapidated state, especially after it was knocked onto a precarious angle by the 2016 Southern Taiwan Earthquake (2016年高雄美濃地震). It has since been shored up with a temporary metal roof and may yet be restored in some form.
