Behind the former Yang Changli Residence in Danei, Tainan, stands a two-storey Western-style mansion said to be the first such house in the township. It was built by Yang Yunxiang (楊雲祥, 1888–1966), a seventh-generation descendant of the Yang Changli (楊長利) family who served as Danei’s first village chief from 1921. Yang donated the land for what is now Danei Elementary School and founded the credit union that grew into the local farmers’ association; after the war he sat as a county councillor. The building pairs a Western lower floor of arched arcades with a Chinese upper storey of timber doors, a Minnan-Western fusion typical of the era. Some uncertainty exists about the exact date of construction, but it seems likely to have been built in the 1920s and significantly renovated in the 1960s. His daughter Yang Yunü (楊玉女, 1910–2002) was a pioneering female public physician who ran the nearby Xuanhu Clinic.
