Chiang Kai-shek Guesthouses

Over thirty guesthouses, villas, and retreats were maintained across Taiwan for the use of generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) and, in some cases, his son and successor Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國). These ranged from primary residences with heavy security to remote alpine lodges inherited from Japanese colonial era imperial facilities, and even places the Chiangs may have visited only once or never at all, claimed by local officials seeking prestige. Many have since been converted into museums, hotels, or cultural centers, while others have been demolished or left to the elements.
