Commissioned by Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國) and built by the China Travel Service (中國旅行社) to promote tourism along the newly opened Cross-Island Highway, this modest guesthouse in Xiulin, Hualien, was completed in 1961. Tianxiang was originally a Truku settlement called Tapido (塔比多), renamed in 1967 after Song dynasty loyalist Wen Tianxiang (文天祥), whose statue replaced the dilapidated Sakuma Shrine (佐久間神社). The hotel, officially known in English as Tien Hsiang Lodge, was rebuilt as a commercial resort in 1991 and renovated into Silks Place Taroko (太魯閣晶英酒店) in 2009.
