The resting place of Chiang Kai-shek, situated on land donated by the Banqiao Lin family in 1955. CKS chose the site for its resemblance to his hometown Xikou (溪口) in Zhejiang, and named the lake Cihu (慈湖), literally “Lake of Maternal Kindness”, in 1962 in memory of his mother Wang Caiyu (王采玉). The original residence, Dongkou Guesthouse (洞口賓館), was completed in 1959 and renamed along with the lake. After CKS’s death on April 5, 1975, his coffin was placed in the main hall but never formally buried, in keeping with the presumption that he would one day be returned to China. In 2018 the coffin was splashed with red paint by pro-independence activists on the anniversary of the 228 Incident. In 2025 the Ministry of National Defense formally reclassified the site as Cihu Camp (慈湖營區), removing the “mausoleum” designation. Chiang Ching-kuo is interred about one kilometer away at Daxi Mausoleum (大溪陵寢).
