Former residence of the late dictator Chiang Kai-shek, occupied from 1950 until his death in 1975. Originally the site of a Japanese colonial era horticultural experimental station, the compound was painted dark green for aerial camouflage and backed by the Fushan Command HQ (福山指揮部), from which all three military branches could be directed. CKS chose the site partly for its proximity to the Tamsui River, providing an escape route by boat in the event Taiwan was overrun. The heavily fortified residence opened to the public in 1996.
